Golden West Hotel – Historic Landmark

Next, teams visited the site of the former Golden West Hotel in Portland. This hotel is a significant landmark in the history of the city’s African American community. In the early 1900s, the Golden West Hotel was one of the largest establishments catering to African Americans in the Northwest. It served as a place of employment, socialization, and refuge during a time when many other establishments were segregated. Today, the building on W. Broadway features display panels and audio narratives that detail this rich history. The challenge for participants was to engage with these educational tools and capture a photo of their team learning about this important historical landmark.
