Follow the Yellow Brick Road – Repentance Park

Repentance Park is a green space on the Mississippi River in downtown Baton Rouge. Repentance Park was originally called Repentance Street during the Spanish rule from 1779 to 1819. It got its name because convicted criminals would have to walk this road to receive their sentence at the Old State Capitol. Today, it is a space for locals to come together and enjoy the outdoors. In this park, you will find beautiful fountains, perfectly maintained plants and trees, statues, and plenty of walkways. Participants had a movie-based photo op challenge at this stop. They had to take a photo of team members skipping along one of the many beautiful park walkways as though they were following the yellow brick road in The Wizard of Oz.

National Historic Landmark – Louisiana’s Old State Capitol

Participants took a trip to Louisiana’s Old State Capitol, which stands high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The national historic landmark was first built in the mid-19th century and originally housed the Louisiana State Legislature. It is now a museum where visitors can go inside and learn about the political history of Louisiana as well as the history of the building. A lot has occurred in this building, and the fact that it is still standing has made it a symbol of the resilience of this state. Teams had to snap a photo of themselves taking a moment to learn about the history of this historic building.

Rich History and Architecture – The Old Governor’s Mansion

Scavenger hunt participants made a stop at the beautiful, Georgian-style, Old Governor’s Mansion. The Old Governor’s Mansion is located just four blocks from the Mississippi River and has been home to nine state governors and their families. The mansion was built by Huey Long, who would become the governor of Louisiana. He was a controversial figure at the time, but he definitely had taste when it came to extravagant architecture. The Old Governor’s Mansion has lots of interesting history and even some myths. Today, locals and tourists can visit the mansion learn about its history, and take in the historic architecture that has been preserved. The photo challenge at this stop was to take a photo of a teammate pretending to swear another teammate into office. The mansion made for the perfect backdrop and a memorable moment.

Raid to Restaurant – The Little Village

Clue: “Find the restaurant that all began with a police raid.” Believe it or not, one of the most iconic restaurants in Baton Rouge all started because of a police raid. The Little Village restaurant was first owned and run by husband and wife, Vince and Stephanie Distefano. Before opening the restaurant, Vince and Stephanie were running card games out of a leased building. One day the building was raided by the sheriff, and everyone in the building was hauled off to jail, including Vince and Stephanie. Prior to being released, the sheriff advised them to get out of town, so they did. They bought a 7-acre plot of land where people could come to play cards and eventually enjoy a meal when the restaurant opened in 1945. The Village Restaurants now has two locations and serves some of the best food in Baton Rouge.
