Coastal Vibes, Big Ambitions

The Long Beach NY Chamber of Commerce champions local businesses by promoting growth, fostering community relationships, and enhancing the overall quality of life in and around Long Beach.

In 2019, they envisioned a city-wide scavenger hunt that would encouraging attendees to discover new local hotspots, support neighborhood vendors, and experience the city’s unique charm.

The Challenge: When Big Ideas Meet Tight Timelines

Facing an expected attendance of up to 500 participants, the Chamber needed more than just a stroll around town. They wanted a large-scale, family-friendly event that would:

  • Showcase local shops, restaurants, and sponsors
  • Stay open to the public and appeal to all ages
  • Drive serious foot traffic in a memorable, low-stress way

The stakes were high. Imagine hundreds of eager participants roaming the streets, sampling local flavors, and forging new connections!

To pull it off, they needed a partner who could handle the logistics of a massive city adventure in under six weeks. It was an ambitious vision, but one they refused to compromise on.

cityHUNT’s Playbook for Success

With the clock ticking, our Adventure Team jumped into action to design a cityHUNT just for them:

  • Customized Challenges: We wove Long Beach history, neighborhood trivia, and positive psychology into app-based clues that kept everyone on their toes.
  • Sponsor & Merchant Highlights: Teams earned points by visiting participating vendors, snapping photos or videos to prove they’d explored each location.
  • “Best Bites” Restaurant Contest: Ten restaurants offered tantalizing dishes for tasting. After sampling each spot, participants voted on their favorite dish — and left with full bellies!

Throughout the planning, our focus was on delivering a simple, stress-free experience. We provided streamlined registration, pre-event instructions, and an in-app tutorial so that on game day, folks could focus on the fun (and a little friendly competition).

No Running Allowed (But Tutus Are Encouraged)

When event day arrived, more than 300 people flooded the streets of Long Beach on foot, bikes, scooters, and wagons. Some dressed in matching outfits, others donned face paint.

After a lively kickoff from the Chamber’s stage, teams launched the cityHUNT app and set off. We had eyes on the real-time feed, watching their hilarious photos and videos roll in.

Here’s how we kept everything safe, organized, and upbeat:

  • No Running Rule: Nobody wants a tutu stampede overwhelming the sidewalks. We kept things lively yet safe (and permit-friendly).
  • Team-Centric Fun: Group-based challenges encouraged players to collaborate on each puzzle or photo mission, forging new connections at every stop.
  • On-the-Fly Support: Our cityHUNT helpline was a tap away in case participants needed a pep talk or got stuck.

The Moment of Truth

After five hours of exploring, snapping selfies, and sampling delicious food, teams trickled back to the starting area, where the top three would receive their prizes.

We tallied the scores and, with a dramatic flourish, the Chamber crowned The Golden Goats as Long Beach’s ultimate scavenger hunt champions, reigning supreme with 3,511 points!

Runners-up The Village Idiots, Sea MOMsters, and 5 Tacos had put up quite a fight, leaving everyone sweaty, smiling, and sharing tales of unexpected discoveries.

The Proof is in the Pizza (and More)

Local businesses enjoyed a wave of new visitors that day. Restaurant owners saw curious faces crowding tables for the “Best Bites” showdown. Sponsor booths got steady foot traffic, sparking genuine connections.

In short, the Chamber’s big dream was realized: people saw firsthand the full range of what Long Beach had to offer.
